10 abortion controversy
Вопрос, имеющий большое значение в общественной жизни страны и влияющий на позиции избирателей на президентских выборах. Аборты были вне закона начиная со второй половины XIX в., и к 1900 в каждом штате законодательство запрещало или строго ограничивало их. В 1966-72 в ряде штатов аборты были разрешены в случае серьезной угрозы здоровью женщины или ребенка, а также если беременность наступила в результате изнасилования, а в четырех штатах - без каких-либо ограничений. В 1973 решением Верховного суда [ Supreme Court, U.S.] аборты были легализованы на общенациональном уровне. Несмотря на это, многие больницы и врачи отказывались делать аборты по религиозным или политическим причинам. Опросы показывают, что большинство американцев поддерживают право на аборт и выступают против вмешательства государства в планирование семьи.
